218100 Claims Accepted by Employment Tribunals last year

Recent Employment Tribunals statistics reveal that Age Discrimination claims have increased by nearly a third (30.8%) year on year. Overall claims from 1 April 2010 to 31 March 2011 are down 8% from the previous year however they are still 44% higher than the year before that.

Age Discrimination

Age Discrimination is now the third most frequent discrimination claim. Whilst there are still considerably less Age Discrimination claims than Sex Discrimination experts are predicting a surge following the recent removal of the default retirement age.

£400,000 Employment Tribunal Payout

Last year Wales’ recorded its biggest employment tribunal payout ever at just under £400,000 for a disability discrimination case. A Jewsons branch manager was dismissed 5 months after suffering a stroke. The tribunal found that the employer had discriminated by not making reasonable adjustment.

Upcoming Legislation

1 October 2011             Equal treatment for agency workers. 
This will give agency workers the same rights to basic employment conditions after 12 weeks in a job as if they had been employed directly by the company.
1 October 2011             National Minimum Wage Increases
                                    £6.08 from £5.93 for 21 years +
                                    £4.98 from £4.92 for 18-20 years olds
                                    £3.68 from £3.64 for 16-17 year olds
                                    £2.60 from £2.50 for apprentices
