The Dangers Of Christmas Parties
Christmas Parties can be a great way of getting to know your employees in an informal social setting but it is important to remember that a social gathering connected to work is likely to be considered an extension of the workplace.
The presence of alcohol will not be considered a reasonable defence if things go awry...
Therefore, from an employment tribunal's perspective, all relevant employment legislation still applies: e.g. discrimination, harassment and bullying etc.
Will you be holding a Christmas party this year? If it isn't the economy, perhaps the fear of employment legislation which the government haven't tackled may put you off.
Providing your employees recognise what is acceptable behaviour and what isn't you should be fairly safe shouldn't you? but will they still recognise right from wrong after a few bottles of Christmas cheer?
Unfortunately, there have been quite a few festive gatherings that have subsequently resulted in litigation...

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL
"Prosonix has used the services of Critchleys HR and Payroll since April 2010."
"In July 2011 we had an unexpected, business critical, HR issue to deal with and Critchleys HR and Payroll swung into action. At very short notice we received authoritative advice on the legal position and the options available to us and, as they had already helped us to update our policies and procedures, the situation was soon brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
I am very grateful for the responsiveness, support and professionalism that the team provided at an extremely difficult time."

HINTS & TIPS: Tricky Employee Conversations
There are some subjects or employees that make conversations tricky and it is all too easy to delay it whilst you find 101 more pressing things to deal with.
Unfortunately, putting off a difficult discussion with an employee can often lead to escalation of the original issue and of course the issue doesn?t get resolved.
This will inevitably require more of your time to resolve and has the potential to increase the discomfort factor for both yourself and the employee when you do get round to dealing with it...
Fortunately, Critchleys HR and Payroll have come up with 5 Top Tips for Tricky Employee Conversations. We have also illustrated some different employee personalities that you may recognise and included some tips on how to flex your communication style to get the desired co-operation.
Click here for a quick reminder on how to handle those tricky conversations. |

COMPETITION: Two Cinema Tickets
Congratulations to Edward Pilling from Edward Pilling & Co Solicitors, who won our latest competition by informing us that he would "rather dine at Portabello" than do the company payroll.
We thought his reply was rather clever and so his prize is a £50 voucher for dinner for two at the North Oxford Portabello Restaurant Bar & Grill in South Parade.
Would you like two tickets to your local cinema to kick off the festive season? You could watch an HR friendly movie like "Disclosure" or "Up In The Air" (so you'll know exactly what NOT to do!)
To win this fabulous prize, simply tell us:
"According to the Oxford English Dictionary, who invented Christmas Crackers?"
Email your answer and contact details to Fiona at: fmcclure@critchleyshr.co.uk and we'll choose the winner on Monday 12th December. |
